Pre-Birthday Weekend

January 17/18, 2015 ~ (See the Full Album Here)

It was the weekend just before my birthday and for fun, I thought it would be nice to check out Starved Rock State Park. I had heard from several people that it was a great park, not just for hiking but what you could find there.. waterfalls, scenery, and at this time of year.. eagles… the bald kind! So Tonia, Mattie and I headed out that way.

As you can imagine, January is still cold and snowy and from the photo above, many things were still frozen. It was still early in the season for the eagles and it was a hefty trek to get to the top of Starved Rock to be able to see them.

The view was spectacular and I did manage to snag a photo of one of the eagles sitting in a tree. Click on the photo and you can just (barely) make out the white head of the majestic bird.

The next day I felt the need for cheese.

We had seen it once before, the Mars Cheese Castle a couple of years ago while taking a mini vacation to Door County in Wisconsin. Back then, we didn’t get a chance to stop. Since this was just across the Illinois/Wisconsin border, it didn’t seem too far to go get some cheese.

It was a great place to visit! Loads of cheese and wine! We will definitely need to go back!
